Culminating Their Junior Show Careers

January 2005

Many Jersey youth each year make the trip to Louisville, Ky., and the All American Junior Jersey Show. Some travel across the vast United States while others have a much shorter journey.

This year two Jersey juniors celebrated the culmination of their years of 4-H and Jersey youth work with the show on November 6 in Freedom Hall. One travelled across the nation, while another had just a short trip to the green shavings of the show.

Martin Cozzitorto, Gustine, Calif., and Brooke Core, Salvisa, Ky., both ended their careers as junior exhibitors at the All American by taking home the two highest honors of the show — Grand and Reserve Grand Champion.

Judge Ronnie Rider and his associate and brother, Michael Rider, both of Upton, Ky., had their work cut out for them as 240 animals paraded before them throughout the day.

Junior day of the All American is a culmination of a year of hard work for the many juniors that exhibit their projects in the show. Their morning begins early, as the cow show starts at 8:00 a.m. and continues throughout the day. It finishes just before the Pot O’Gold Sale begins in Newmarket Hall at 4:30 p.m. After juniors make investments in their future through the sale, they head to the South Hall for the All American Junior Banquet at 7:00 p.m. During the next two hours, over 100 dairy youth are recognized for their achievements within the past year.

The Champions

Two three-year-olds took home the top honors. Martin Cozzitorto captured the purple banner for Senior and Grand Champion with Llolyn Jude Griffen-ET, a senior three-year-old. Brooke Core took home the Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion banners with her junior three-year-old, KCJF Regency Treasure.

“This pair of young cows are a close placing,” described Rider in his reasons. “Both have beautiful udders, extreme openness of rib and good feet and legs. But the senior three-year-old has an advantage in length of neck today.”

In finding his Junior Champion heifers, judge Rider looked to the heifer that “jumped out and got him from the start” the intermediate yearling.

Two Maryland juniors took home the Junior Champion honors. Named Junior Champion was Lesmeister Favour Martha, exhibited by Shana L. Dean, Ridgely, Md. Ryan Poole, Westminster, Md., took home the Reserve Junior Champion banner with SV Hercules Sharla.

Other Awards

The second place senior two-year-old was the winner of Premier Performance class. Ladyholm N Symphony, exhibited by Avery Lutz, Mocksville, N.C., earned the highest point total to win the Premier Performance Cow award. The $500 premium was sponsored by Robert and Helene Driesbach. Taking second was the fourth place aged cow, JVB Red Hot Aerohurts Maybelle, exhibited by Greta Koebel, Three Oaks, Mich. She received a $250 cash award sponsored by Endres Jazzy Jerseys. Placing third and receiving a $100 check was last years overall winner, JEMI Madam Pitino, exhibited by R. J. Doran, Newberry, S.C.

The Jim and Linda Billman and Family Trophy, for the top producing cow based upon Yield Deviation for pounds of protein, went to Joshua Parks, Morristown, Tenn., on his junior two-year-old, AG Freedoms Diamond-ET. Her yield deviation was +155 protein.

Brooke Core, Salvisa, Ky., received the Premier Breeder banner for the sixth year. While Zach Stiles, Clear Brook, Va., won the Premier Exhibitor Banner. Both were sponsored by Bush River Jerseys, Newberry, S.C. Core and her junior three-year-old cow, KCJF Regency Treasure, also received the Dutch Hollow Farm for best bred and owned honors of the show.

Class Winners

Beginning the day with a class of 13 milking yearlings, Rider commented, “What a beautiful class!”

“We started the class with a pair of cows that might be a close placing, but our first cows just walks out on her feet and legs better than the second cow” continued Rider of Deans Star Bright exhibited by Rachel White, New Castle, Ind. She was followed by Deerview Ella Arlinda, exhibited by Kelsey Lutz, Mocksville, N.C. “Arlinda” is a cow that “blends better and carries strength throughout.”

“Her overall sharpness and cleanliness, carries her over the second place cow” praised Rider. “She is also the best udder of the class with an advantage in teat placement.”

“Size and strength” carried “Symphony” to her placing.

The eventual Grand Champion of the show sorted herself “to the top pretty easily. I love the sharpness, cleanliness and mammary system on this cow. She is a well balanced and beautiful animal.” Rider said of Llolyn Jude Griffen-ET. She was exhibited by Martin Cozzitorto, Gustine, Calif.

Rider complemented the second place cow, Tower Vue Terror on her “stature and strength and mammary system.” She was bred and exhibited by Scott Walton, Carlisle, Pa.

Huronia GD Grace 24J shown by Amanda Curtis, Anna, Ohio, was the winner. She was followed closely by Brooke Core and KCJF Responses Glaze. “First places over second today primarily on her advantage in the mammary system,” explained Rider.

“This is a beautiful aged cow class and we are starting the class today with an eight-year-old cow,” said Rider. “She is a cow that holds herself together, walks on a good set of feet and legs, and still carries her mammary system above the hock.”

“A beautiful bodied cow” followed in second for Rachel White with Responses Cheryl in this class of 15 cows.

SV Heaths Beyonce, exhibited by MacKenzie Poole, Westminster, Md., had the edge as she was “nicer in the front end and shoulder” than Stookeyholm Prime Time Faith, exhibited by Mallarie Stookey, Milford, Ind.

Kents First Lady of Bolle-Acres, exhibited by Brandi Stevens, Argos, Ind., won based on her “total overall length.” Smart J Imp Nate Gunner Breezy, exhibited by Lindsay Schilling, Boggstown, Ind., fit easily with “First Lady” as they were described as “the strongest pair of heifers in the class.”
