"Veronica" - Handling It All with Grace
January 2005
Huronia Centurion Veronica 20F proved
to the world what a true National Champion is made of at the 2004 All
American Jersey Show on Monday, November 8, 2004.
The 2002 Reserve National Grand
Champion took a year off from the show circuit, and came back in 2004
as strong as ever. Over the past two years she has changed ownership,
been a part of an extensive flush program and traveled across the
United States this fall for shows. This four-year-old cow handled it
with grace as she was named Grand Champion and Reserve Supreme
Champion at the World Dairy Expo in October. But, that was only the
beginning for her new owners Arethusa Farm in Litchfield, Conn.
“Veronica” hit the green shavings in
Freedom Hall and captured the title of National Grand Champion to add
to her ever growing list of accomplishments.
Taking home the Reserve Grand Champion
honor was eight-year-old, Robin Acres Ren Alpha 10F. She was exhibited
by Ted and Diane Smart and Family, Amanda Curtis and Alexis Roe, Anna,
Ohio.
Judging the show this year was no
stranger to the winners circle at the All American Jersey Show. Alta
Mae Core, Salvisa, Ky., and her husband Jeff Core served as her
Associate judge. During the day the two sorted through the 355 cows
and heifers.
The Champions of the Day
“I am honored to be in this spot
today,” Core told a packed arena. “I literally grew up in this arena
and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the opportunity and I
wouldn’t trade this moment for anything.”
Udders and style and balance were the
key for the winners of all of the classes throughout the day.
“I am going with the cow that I fell in
love with at first sight for my Intermediate Champion,” said Core.
Hillary Horst, Bristow, Iowa, and her
junior two-year-old, GCJ Jade Varsity, headed to the center of the
ring to claim her banner and rosette. “Varsity” was exhibited by a
partnership of Robert A. Horst and Waverly Farm, Clear Brook, Va.
Claiming Reserve Intermediate Champion
was Family Hill SD Favorite, bred, owned and exhibited by Ryan
Lancaster, Ferndale, Wash.
“These two cows just blend together and
are a more complete package with their style and balance,” explained
Core.
The selection for Senior Champion came
down to the first place four-year-old and the Aged Cow, “Veronica” and
“Alpha.”
“These two cows just put it all
together for us today” said Core of her picks for the Senior and
Reserve Senior Champions.
Total Performance Winners
The Premier Performance Cow and winner
of the Allen D. Meyer Challenge Trophy, as well as $2,000, was the
fifth place cow in the National Jersey Jug Futurity, Sunset Canyon
Hallmark Belle 1-ET. She is owned and exhibited by Eric Leonard Silva,
Beaver, Ore. She received a score of 92 out of 100 points, based on
her fifth place finish and a yield deviation of +3,295M, +181F, and
+119P.
WF Barber Harmony, second in the junior
three-year-old class, took home a check for $1,000 sponsored by Arm
and Hammer. “Harmony” was exhibited by Waverly Farms, Clear Brook, Va.
A total of $7,000 was offered for the
Premier Performance class at the 2004 All American Jersey Show.
Individual placing sponsors can be found on page 34.
Junior Females
Two maternal sisters took home the

“The spring yearlings are a pretty easy
decision for me,” judge Core said. “I thought it was the strongest
class of the day and they are two outstanding individuals.”
Jewels Deluxe Model-ET captured Junior
Champion honor for Ehrhardt Farms, Baldwin, Md. While Jewel of the
Nile-ET owned by Lorne Ella, Hornsby, Ontario, Canada, captured
reserve champion honors. They are daughters of last years first place

The Class Winners
“It is a real honor to here to line
these cattle up today,” said judge Core after the 29 milking yearlings
were placed.
“I started the class today with a
heifer that for me is just the most complete heifer today,” continued
Core as she described Stora of Oblong Valley exhibited by Justin
Burdette, Howard Binder Jr. and Waverly Farm, Mercersburg, Pa. “She is
extremely stylish on parade . . . I like the youthfulness of her udder
as it is very strongly attached.” She was named best udder of the
class.
“I followed her with the beautiful
framed cow that follows the pattern of the first place cow with style
and balance,” said Core of Hillacres Wish Upon A Star, shown by Gene
and Kathy Iager, Fulton, Md.
The third place individual, Deans Star
Bright, owned by Stephen H., Bradley S., John M. and Rachel L. White,
