January 2010 Editorial
Broken Records
In their year-end wrap-ups, business analysts and
pundits of all stripes struggled to find much (anything?) positive
to say about 2009 and the first decade of the 21st century,
mirroring the attitude of Americans who rated it as the “worst
decade in 50 years” in a survey conducted by the Pew Research
Center.
While this period has been resoundingly difficult
for members of the Jersey community, we have also experienced an
amazing, golden period of Jersey breed growth. The book on the
decade began with implementation of Federal Order multiple component
pricing on January 1, 2000 and closed December 31, 2009 with
all-time records for Jersey registrations, herd service enrollments,
and investments in Jersey milk marketing. The results of 2009 and
the ‘00 decade came from decisions dating 20, 30, 40 and more years
ago and sustained by vigorous efforts ever since. More about that
later. This is how your organizations performed in 2009.
